OpenAIRE2020 promises open access to H2020 results for all

Horizon2020Starting in January 2015, OpenAIRE2020 will monitor H2020 research outputs and help to spread H2020's scientific publications.

Over the years, OpenAIRE has become an essential component of EU research. The collaborative network has identified over 100 000 FP7 publications and has made them openly accessible via digital repositories. Now including over 9 million publication from 547 data sources, the initiative is gaining new momentum with a continuation project, OpenAIRE2020.

OpenAIRE2020 brings together professionals from research libraries, open scholarship organisations, national e-infrastructure and data experts, along with IT and legal researchers. Together they will be charged with the important mission of collecting H2020 project output, supporting research data management and creating workflows and services on top of the current OpenAIRE platform. These are expected to enable an interoperable network of repositories as well as easy upload into an all-purpose repository. The results of H2020 projects will be made available to all, for free.

‘Europe's taxpayers have a right to know how their money is invested. Because research and innovation are vital to people's futures, it is important to bring the research and innovation activities funded through Horizon 2020 to the attention of the general public, showing in particular the added value of Union level action. This will generate better public understanding, engagement and debate,’ argues the EC proposal for a regulation laying down the rules of participation dissemination under Horizon 2020.

The OpenAIRE2020 project, which will be kicked off in January 2015, will assist in this endeavor by monitoring H2020 research outputs and providing a key infrastructure for spreading H2020's scientific publications.

The EC's Research Data Pilot, which aims to freely share valuable information produced by researchers under H2020, will also highly benefit from OpenAIRE2020’s European-wide outreach for best research data management practices and its Zenodo platform. The latter enables researchers, scientists, EU projects and institutions to share and showcase multidisciplinary research results that are not part of the existing institutional or subject-based repositories of the research communities and provides long-tail data storage.

Other activities under OpenAIRE2020 include collaboration with national funders to reinforce the infrastructure's research analytic services; an APC Gold Open Acess pilot for FP7 publications with collaboration from the Asscoaition of European Research Libraries (LIBER); novel methods of review and scientific publishing with the involvement of the public platform for acadmic blogs hypotheses.org; a study and a pilot on scientific indicators related to open access with assistance of the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS); legal studies to investigate data privacy issues relevant to the Open Data Pilot; and international alignment with related networks elsewhere with the involvement of the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR).

The project is supported by 50 partners from all EU Member-States and backed by EUR 13 million of EC budget.
